POKOTABI / Mampuku
焼肉万福
Mampuku in Asagaya-minami serves charcoal-grilled yakiniku, ranging from wallet-friendly kalbi and thick-cut liver to salted tongue, stews, and soups. Run by a husband-and-wife team, it offers an unpretentious setting for a hearty meat dinner.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set along a quiet street in Asagaya-minami, Mampuku invites diners to pull up a seat around charcoal grills enveloped in savoury smoke. The husband-and-wife owners welcome guests with easygoing hospitality, lending the room an unpretentious atmosphere that fills with local diners once evening dinner service begins.
The backbone of the menu is beef yakiniku priced for everyday visits. Straightforward kalbi provides satisfying depth without excess expense, complemented by choices such as juicy salted tongue, prime harami skirt steak, and prime loin. Offal is another strong draw, highlighted by thick, crisp-textured liver alongside shiro pork intestine, upper tripe (mino), and tecchan large intestine, all especially good when tossed in house-made miso before hitting the wire grid.
A varied selection of side dishes keeps the table interesting between cuts of meat, including horse meat sashimi, horse meat yukhoe, crisp lettuce for wrapping, and chilled sliced tomatoes. To finish the meal, diners can choose from bubbling hot pots such as beef jjigae and tofu jjigae, or turn to comforting soups like rich beef bone gomtang, kalbi soup, and spicy tegutang. Draft beer, makgeolli, and highballs provide easy accompaniments to enjoy at your own pace.
Because tables can fill up quickly, reserving a seat in advance is wise. The restaurant operates on a cash-only basis, so be sure to prepare Japanese yen before arriving.
